ACE Film Festival
by William Speruzzi on 02/9/2007The world of film festivals is a tricky one on both sides. The runners want the name talent and the filmmakers want the recognition and somewhere in between the thing has to make money to stay afloat for years to come. Case and point; Sundance. It was a refuge back in the day for the independent voice, a home for the homeless. These films were made out of necessity. They were sometimes ugly and sometimes unrefined but they, for the most part, tried to find some truth within their orphan child personas.
Enter the ACE (American Cinematic Experience) Film Festival. Born too out of necessity and emerging from lower Manhattan’s ashes this festival promises to create a niche, grassroots environment for American-only produced films. The founders, Luke Szczyglielski and Tom O’Malley, both 23, have no intention of it becoming a bloated festival that outgrows its roots. Taking place at the Broad Street Ballroom across from the NYSE the festival will also provide a safe haven called Club ACE for filmmakers to network, talk shop and sell their films. ACE is supported by local sponsorship and providing a portion of ticket sales to the New York Foundation for the Arts.
The festival dates are August 24th-26th. They are currently taking submissions. Go to the site and get the m.o.
